NEW ATTEMPT OF "SOCIALIZATION" OF THE RÍO BLANCO PLAN IN MOLLETURO REJECTED

(Desde Catalunya (España) traducción de Teresa Barbal i Rodoreda para El Frente de Mujeres Defensoras de la Panchamama)

May 30, 2011 .- A new attempt at the "socialization" of the Molleturo Rio Blanco plan, made by the Canadian International Mineral Corporation -IMC- was rejected.

Yesterday, The Molleturo Popular Defense Coordinator - CPM- and The Women Defenders of the Pachamama Front, both members of the National Coordinator for the Defense of Life and Sovereignty - CNDVS-, held another day of protest to reject the claim of the Ministry of Environment and of the IMC to "socialize" their mega plan.

The resounding rejection was due to the facts that the company never made prior consultations to communities and that their concessions are within the protected area of The Cajas National Park and, therefore, the concessions should have been cancelled by the Mining Act.

Moreover, this company has even broken the Labor Act and, therefore, has already faced a trial, which was won by former workers. However, the company is trying to get the approval of the Environmental Impact Study, now that their former manager, Federico Auquilla, is the Mining Vice- Minister.

That is why women’s rejection was strong and brave, despite the atmosphere of intimidation created by the mining company and the government; a patrol of policemen was present throughout the week, and there were rumors that several members of The Women Defenders of the Pachamama Front had been identified and would be seized by the police.

Women, men, young people and children said “no to mining!” once more, and showed the IMC and the government that they are determined to continue the resistance against foreign invasion.
.
With a demonstration and a walk, banners, slogans, head held high, a burning heart and the confidence of knowing that their struggle is just and necessary, The Molleturo Popular Defense Coordinator and The Women Defenders of the Pachamama Front have given an example of courage and dignity once again; they haven’t been intimidated by the presence of dozens of police officers who were transferred to a special operation with one goal: that the IMC could "socialize" their plan.

Despite all this, the plan the IMC and the government want to carry out was rejected and, as on previous occasions, those who wanted “socialization” and the police had to leave crestfallen.
