CONCERN ABOUT WOMEN IN MOLLETURO
Yesterday morning there was a peaceful demonstration to protest against the possible socialization of the Rio Blanco project of the IMC mining company. It is the President of the Provincial Board of Molleturo who wants this project to be socialized. People from different communities went to the Provincial Board Headquarters to express their anger about this humbug: they want to socialize the mining project but they have not done anything against the illegal, illegitimate concessions the IMC mining company has been granted and, on the other hand, the Mining Law has not been enforced. That is why the protesters asked the civil servants of the Ministry of Environment and of the Secretariat of Peoples who were due to carry out the "socialization” to leave. Then the protesters left the room.
The protesters remained outside the Provincial Board Headquarters, where a public meeting was held, and several women comrades reported, with concern, the presence of a person who took pictures with a mobile phone; when one of the women asked why he was taking pictures, the man answered, "Fuck me, old bitch."
Once the demonstration in the main square was over, a pro-mining person insulted Lina Solano Ortiz, who was there with other members of The Women Defenders of the Pachamama Front. When passing in front of them, the guy said, "I would like to bite this bitch’s ass."
But this is not the worst. At about 4:30 p.m., a police patrol from Cuenca got to comrade Blanca Gerardina Gutama Gutama’s home. She was not in at that time and the policemen talked to her children and said that they were looking for her because there had been an accusation against her, because a young man ( presumably the one who was at the meeting taking pictures with his mobile phone) had been beaten and kidnapped.
We want to denounce this situation of violence against women in Molleturo and against the members of The Women Defenders of the Pachamama Front. These women find themselves involved in incidents they know nothing about. We also want to recall that we have previously reported several cases of comrades who have been threatened by miners of the area and who have even been physically assaulted by pro-mining men, have been mistreated by the security forces, have been arbitrarily arrested, have been prosecuted and have undergone other violations of Human Rights carried out by the government and the state.
It’s amazing how the police are ready to attend calls from pro-mining people. Those pro-mining people must be really powerful since the police immediately come from Cuenca to persecute women comrades .
This is just another dirty trick. They are trying to intimidate those women who are courageously fighting for their rights in Molleturo, and who remain firm in resisting.
